leather sofa = scratched badly

Options
i assume you guys here would be the most helpful as you are all full of wonderful ideas and im hoping you can help me.

a year ago a few weeks before MFI went into admin we purchased a 3 seater and 2 seater leather sofa. we were one of the lucky souls to receive our goods.

ok, our bad and im not disputing the goods, our dog who is old has always been allowed on the sofa [we didnt have him from a pup and have tried everything to not allow him on the sofas to no aval]. he has scratced the hell out of one of the seats and did so within 2 weeks of us having the sofas, maybe it is a shoddy sofa? no one to complain to though to be honest if this is the case.

we have had leather before and its never been scratched. this is bad and the colour has gone in places.

my question to you is are there any ti[ps for restoring faded an scratched leather? soft leather i assume it is. would shoe polish to the trick or something else without damaging peoples clothing?

Hi, did you get the sofa treated with scotchguard before it was delivered? I had a sofa treated with it and found it helped a bit.
When I bought my latest sofa which is brown leather I bought a good cleaning/protection kit with it, had handy wipes and a little stick thing like a lipsalve, this got the black biro off that my toddler drew all over the seats quite well.
However, my cat has scratched the bottom of the sofa really badly, and also the top where she sometimes sits...when I had a good look, this trim part was actually vinyl, not leather!!!
Needless to say, I'm never buying a leather sofa ever again!!!

I had some cat scratches on my leather sofa and was advised to use conditioner and gently rub it in with a soft cloth. You need to clean the sofa first to make sure there is nothing on it. It definitely made the scratches appear less severe although, if yours are particularly deep, there are specialist companies who do leather repair - but this might be costly!

thanks both. he hasnt got long claws but the seating area is so badly scratched and for it to happen after just 2 weeks of ownership probably tells me so mething but it was what we could afford at the time and had just moved in and found my trusty old friend of the last sofa didnt fit the room. we have put a throw on the 2 sofas but they slip off and then off he goes a scratching.

MFI - shoddy? oh yes but our fault for allowing the dog up.

    oh well...

I'd get some brown [or the leather colour] shoe polish and some saddlesoap or beeswax/leather treatment stuff. Stain the scratch brown with the polish and finish up with wax? Why not do the whole thing while youre at it. Make sure theres no excess, test for staining on some white fabric.
You could try dubbin/nikwax which is for walking boots...??
    Just ideas.
And dont let that dog on there!! ;)

Hi there, I used to be in the furniture trade and rightly or wrongly, on leather scratches if deep the edges can be coloured with marker pen (brown or black), if slight I use baby lotion (the pink stuff) any brand and rub it into the leather then rub off when dry this seems to feed it. I use it on all bags and shoes to remove scuffs. You may be able to claim on your house insurance though.

Depends on the colour of the leather but I'd consider re-staining it with shoe-dye if shoe-polish won't cover the scratches

Saddles soap should do it....it works miracles on horse tack! To do the best job, get a sponge or soft cloth and dampen it very slightly with water (if its too wet it won't work properly) rub in the saddle soap and get quite a bit on it then rub it into the leather. You need to really work it in until it gets absorbed by the leather. You don't need to finse it, just let it soak in. Once its dry you can polish it up with a soft dry cloth.
