job seekers allowance-redundancy

ive ben working all my adult life and have now been made redundant so ive signed on and been told i can get income based and contribution based job seekers allowance but i dont know if they mean ill get both at same time or 1 at a time. ive got 4 young kids eldest being 7 and at school does having children make a difference to the amount yuou are given just need to budget as this is first doing this like i say been working all my life. any advise welcomed..thanks.

im on income based job seekers, as far as im aware you can only get one.
i was told at the time of applying i didnt qualify for contribution based so therefore i got income based.

i'm not sure about kids because i haven't got any, but normal jobseekers is just over £50 a week

Contributions based JSA is based on having made enough NI contributions. It is £65/week (paid fortnightly) and will be paid regardless of savings/redundancy/other household income etc , you just have to be seen to make the effort to find a job.

If you don't qualify, or have been receiving it for to long then you receive means tested JSA instead which will take account of savings/redundancy/other household income etc.

In addition there are a host of other benefits (eg housing benefit) that you may be entitled to
