wireless receiver for my pc

hi i have searched for a solution but haven't found it yet so hopefully someone can help me or point me in the right direction - if have posted in the wrong place please let me know or move it to the right place

right i use a dell pc which is connected to a sky broadband router/modem (how do i know which one it is?)

my bf uses his ps3 downstairs and it is connected wirelessly to the internet.

when i use the pc, at the same time as he is playing his ps3 online - he loses signal and the ps3 doesn't function properly.

he said it is because i am connected hardline (first ive ever heard of this!) and that we would both be able to use the internet freely if we were both using wireless internet

so what i would like to know is do i need to buy a connection for my pc? i dont think my pc is wireless enabled - any ideas on how i find this out for defo?

thanks once again and i hope someone can help x

Hardline being that the ethernet cable is connected from router to your machine.

When your pc and his ps3 is connected does it get an ip conflict message on the dell machine. This will probably cause it to have problems.

Firstly, this has nothing to do with you being wireless or not so don't go buying anything as you will be wasting your money !

Have you tried logging into the router and disabling UPnP,it's a common cause for this type of problem ?

    Go to http://192.168.0.1

login is Admin / Sky if you've not changed it

Click on UPnP on the left and untick the box then click on apply

He probably means 'hard-wired' or 'cabled'...

The 'Modem' is the part of the 'Router' box (or sometimes a seperate little box) that connects the Router to the actual broadband connection cable coming from Sky.

As such, being wired should have no bearing on the wireless. I have a Wii and a Netbook (both wireless), as well as 2 cables desktop PC's and a networked printer. And all works OK.

As others have said, you need to follw their advice and check the setup of the router.

thanks for your replies. i didn't think he knew what he was talking about lol!

when he says he loses his signal it isnt do with the bars when playing call of duty - his man wont move and its delayed shooting and stuff - but this only ever happens when im on the pc

i will give those things a try when i get home from work - maybe i should speak to sky and upgrade my broadband? or is it just the speed of broadband in my area that may be part of the problem?

thanks again for all your help

First test your broadband speed on both PC's:
    https://www.speedtest.net
No point in upgrading your broadband if it's just a problem with the wireless connection, upgrading will do nothing to improve that.
Then test the wireless PC with a temporary ethernet connection, if the problem goes away you know it is just a wireless problem.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Swap them around or borow a laptop, it's the connection sped you are testing, not the device.

I have the Netgear router so it's the last option on the left hand side under the Advanced section.

Which router do you have ?
