There are many Youtube videos on how to install XP the one I used in the past is this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUdZUlfNCSk0

you need all the drivers for the chipset/lan/sound/video etc before you start (as already mentioned) as you could run into problems with compatibility.
you also need to set the bios to boot from CD to do a clean install.0 -
I dont know if anyone is reading this properly , I have set it to boot from cd which it does but it says the copy I am using is older than the current version installed and wont install.0

How about making an XP slipstreamed disc with nlite. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppMnjt3eTJw&feature=PlayList&p=9762076113A4CBA7&index=00

It sounds like you need to format your hard drive. First, as always, take a copy of all your data as it is going to be irretrivably removed from your hard drive. Download the windows service packs (1, 2 and 3), so you can install them straight away without having to connect to the internet. Then download all the appropriate drivers for your laptop from the manufacturer (unless you already have a disk with them on). Then download a tool which will allow you to reformat your drive when you boot up. I would suggest DBAN, purely because i know it works. You burn it to a disk, then boot from disk and go from there.
Once DBAN has run boot from the XP installation disk and there shouldn't be any problems.0 -
Are you perhaps missing the 'press any key to boot from cd' prompt?
This shows if an OS is present even if set to boot from cd first.
It's a safety measure.
If this works and the install goes ahead, DON'T do the same when the prompt comes up part way through, when the machine reboots itself.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
