router without desktop computer

now heres one straight from the Waxies bag of silly questions...

I know someone who's does not have a desktop computer but has a laptop....how do you get the internet to work to the laptop. With mine at home the broadband cable goes from the phoneline to the router and the ethernet from my desktop to the router and its then wireless to the laptops

I would imagine loads of people only have laptops and that the phoneline would still go to the router and it would work wirelessly as usual (laptop has built in wireless)

hope that load of waffle makes sense...as you can see my techy knowledge is zero

The only point that should be added is that it is much safer to use an ethernet connection when changing administrative options within the router...
