Can anyone tell me why insurance for touring caravans is SO expensive?
Why is it more expensive than car insurance and why can't touring caravans be added to my house insurance?

1) Not a big market and so little competition to drive down premiums
2) Main issue is on the road accidents - a caravan landing on a vehicle gives a high probability of a high cost claim and PI claims and you have all the risks of high winds, cornering to sharply plus the fact not many people rare really that experienced of towing such a large "trailer" and yet you need no qualifications/ tests to do so. As another issue is that if you are involved in an RTA the caravan is often totalled because of their construction so not only high TP claims but a high AD claim too.All posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

as well it has something to do with where you store it, and any anti theft precautions you take.
Many caravans are stored in nothing more than a field which means they are more accessible for stealing/breaking in.2014 Target;

Have you tried E&L
Make sure you aren't insuring for more than the van is actually worth. I always get an up to date Glass's guide price to base my caravan insurance on.

Hi avoid E & L as per the current thread on their pet insurance.
Their claims handling gets flamed regularly as apparently it is often sub standard.

When we had a caravan, we insured it through the Caravan Club, worth the subscription as the insurance was cheaper, and you could use Caravan club places that only held 5 vans a time, and cost £2 a night!I Believe in saving money!!!:T

We used to have ours insured on a Norwich Union policy but we made a big claim last year so the premium rocketed (Lets they they were having a laugh rather than quoting me happy!). :mad: I now insure the house and caravan separately and saved myself around £70. :T
The caravan is insured through Adrian Flux who were reasonably accommodating about the claim.I have plenty of willpower - it's won't power I need.

To insure my 1998 Coachman it costs £90 per year with Caravan Guard. The cost came down because it is parked outside my house, has a wheel clamp on each wheel and an alko hitchlock. Previously it was insured at twice that price through the NW bank."Dogs come when they are called. Cats take a message and get back to you" :j :j0

I joined the caravan club too and insured it with their insurance which worked out cheaper.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040
