There is efficiency and there are regulations. What's your point?

I believe that new boilers fitted now, must meet certain efficiency standards due to regulations from two shags old orifice!

However this has nothing to do with whether a hot water storage tank is used or not.

  • Think very carefully how you would heat hot water if your combi boiler failed?

Very good point that I had forgotten about as we never actually use our immersion heater!

Neither did we until our boiler packed up in January. It took a week to fix, but at least we had a gas fire and electric heaters to keep warm and an immersion for hot water. How many kettles of water would it take to fill a bath I wonder?

Combi boilers may be good, but they have severe limitations if you ask me and I would advise very careful consideration before fitting one. Especially if in a family house.

But which taps do you have the combi and hot water tank connected to? Or do you run water from the hot water tank through the combi-boiler to provide hot water?

Those are both conventional systems either combi without hot water tank or hot water tank using conventional not combi boiler. You have stated that it's not necessary to remove the hot water tank when installing a combi boiler. This may be feasible but I'm interested in how you run the hot water in such a system.

The main difference in the way that a combi boiler is plumbed in, is that the cold feed is connected directly to the boiler and not via header tanks in the loft. i.e. the system works at mains pressure. The header tanks are not used when using a combi boiler but if a hot water storage tank is required, it is plumbed in a very similar to the conventional system but without the header tanks.
