Need a second car - any ideas?

We need a second car mainly for hubby for work which is a round trip of 80 miles 4 times a week. We have two kids so would preferably need something 4 door. But want something cheap to tax, insure, repair and maintain.
However the most important thing is reliability, oh has to leave the house at around 5.30am and we need a car that will start on these cold icy mornings! and be reliable as there is no other way of him getting to work.
Can anyone give any tips on which make/model would be good? we are willing to spend £2-3k

I think a Ford Focus would be good for what you are after.0

Loads of possible choices really, but how about some manner of Ford Mondeo, 2001 reg onwards? Decent, fairly low mileage ones can still be found for around that much, estates are always good if you can get one, cheap to buy, cheap to run, cheap to fix if they go wrong.
And I'm fairly sure Ford's reliability record has improved vastly over the last few years. I had an old L reg one years ago and it was awesome in every way - I forgot to put oil in it for a year and it still ran faultlessly :rotfl:

Yes I must admit I didn't think Ford as I used to have a ford fiesta (f reg) and hubby had a c reg escort and both constantly broke down and wouldn't start in the cold, but we are talking 15 years ago so they may have improved since then!
I had thought about a honda accord (love the new shape but can't afford that) but still not sure if we could get one in our price range. Don't really want to go as big as a mondeo, would prefer focus size or smallerAug GC £63.23/£200, Total Savings £00 -

Pshaw, lightweight!
A Focus or Astra or similar then would do the job admirably I'd have thought. Although if you can get Japanese then even better. I love Jap cars - you'd probably do well with something like this:

Going to be a bit left of field (and I will get my tin helmet ready).
What about a Rover 75?0
