Hi hope someone can help me
I have a mate that is on Blueyonder and his IP doesnt change that much. so will buying a router solve this problem
is it true that buying a new router would change the IP??
its a pub argument and I said I would come and ask you guys, cos I haven't a ruddy clue, and tbh I just want the peeps involved to stop banging on about it

ISP's provide your IP address and some will provide a static IP address (usually at extra cost) but buying a router will not change your IP address. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

Why is the fact that it doesn't change much regarded as a problem?Stompa0

pass, I said I'd ask the question and I have, like I said I ain't got a clue and don't care, its just driving me mad them going on about it all the time0 -
It sort of does if you use the NAT (network address translation) function (usually enabled by default), but the IP that you use to contact the world doesn't change. If the friend wants to be seen as a different number to the outside world, he will have to use a proxy service..
http://tor.eff.org/ etc..
NAT is a way of sharing the one real IP address with 1 or more computers. Your PC will get a local ip address of 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x, but the router will translate this to the real address so that you can communicate with the outside world.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
ok quick question for my benefit now: as you are all so helpful
I wanna change from from BTYahoo to someone else, has to be reliable on a BT phone line (unless any other suggestions) and also has to have at least a 2meg connection
anyone on a decent package they could recommend??

Kind of. The first time you connect it, you should get a brand new IP. This is because Telewest will see a new "computer" (MAC address for the techies). It will then lease you a new address. When its time to renew that address, because the computer/MAC address has not changed, most of the time it will give you the same IP. I say most cos Telewest could change something which would force a new address to be given but its certainly nothing you could control.
At the end of the day, getting a new IP is pretty irrelevent. You'll only ever get an IP from a small range anyway which Telewest have assigned to your network.0 -

Eclipse are generally ok. You could go on one of the Evolution packages. I'm on the cheapest, £15 a month, "unlimited" 8Mbps. I never actually get 8Mbps, generally around 1-4Mbps, which is still ok, especially for £15 a month "unlimited" downloads.
In most cases your ISP will allocate you an ip address dynamically from a resource pool. If you disconnect and reconnect your modem it may re-assign you (sometimes they re-assign per reconnection, others per period, ie you may get assigned an ip address for 3 days).
You can get static addresses, but as mentioned you often get charged extra for these (not at Eclipse!)."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
Thanks wolfman I'll bear that one in mind0
