Two year old bill

Not sure if this is the right forum, but it's utilities related so here goes.
I left EON in 2007 and switched to Atlantic. Last month I got a bill from EON for £32 which they claim is an unpaid balance. I've definitely not had this bill before and don't have the old bills going back that far to validate it.
I know it's only 30 quid but I don't want to pay if I don't have to. Is there any sort of limit as they have only got round to billing me years after my contract with them ended?
Thanks

Hi climbatron - Whilst you do not have your old bills from EON, what you should have is your Start Meter reading with Atlantic, and the End Reading on EON's late bill should match it.
If EON's bill does not give consumption period dates and Meter readings, ask them for a bill that does - you are entitled to it
When you switch, it is the new supplier who informs the old supplier of the date of change and meter reading, but this part of the 'system' often goes awry and final bills from the old supplier have been issued on Estimated readings !

Hi climbatron,
dogshome has pretty much hit the nail on the head.
Check the meter readings do match from one supplier to another, if they do, I would then be asking the reason why it has taken so long to produce this bill.
If the readings don't match or the E.ON final read is estimated, you will need to provide the reading that Atlantic started your account from.
Also ask if you were sent a final bill when you switched.

Thanks Premier that's spot on. I'll check the readings as well but looks like there's my answer.
