Improving sound from my TV

Hi all
Any advise on upgrading from my TV's speakers? My missus hates the idea of speakers all over the place so is resistant to a full surround sound system. Is there some sort of compromise like pseudo surround involving just a system which can sit alongside the TV?
My inputs are from a virgin media cable box connected by scart to the TV and a old style (not slim) PS3 for games, DVDs and Blu-rays, connected by s-video. TV is an early non HD LCD, although thats probably irrelevant.. Guessing you connect these systems direct to the sound system and turn off the sound on the TV?
Thanks in advance for any advise!

How about a set of headphones so you wont hear the missus moaning?
I have just sold my home cinema system as the missus didnt like the look of it.0 -
Sony and Panasonic (at least) do TV stands with 'home cinema' built in. They're very tidy as they cut down on wires, but they're still big enough to give decent sound. You'll want to get one with HDMI which will make connecting the PS3 simpler.0
