In my locality I have nthe choice of:
Iceland
Tescos
sainsburies
Aldi
Lidl
Morrisons
Farmfoods
I buy 70% from Morrisons I prefer them and the food we buy is cheaper and quality is top drawer then sainsburies for things we cant get at morrisons.Weight loss challenge 66lb to go /59lb's lost
Grocery Budget January £150/£175
Feb £150/0 -
Guess it depends what sort of food you buy - for me I find the quality much better than Tesco and for what I buy much cheaper!
Vegetables (those from Morrisons do not last as well - Aldi's are FAR better) butter, milk, yoghurts, juice, bread (we live from scratch so not a lot of brand names or rubbish I'm afraid):D,
I can only speak as I find - and the majority of the basic food items I buy are cheaper in Tesco - I buy the special offers in Morrisons if they beat the ones in Tesco - they don't very often:o"there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0 -

Hang on, you said Tesco was better than Morrisons, Kirri said the quality was better at Morrisons, and you come back with that. Where does Aldi come into itmoggylover wrote: »I can only speak as I find - and the majority of the basic food items I buy are cheaper in Tesco - I buy the special offers in Morrisons if they beat the ones in Tesco - they don't very often:o
So, you go into Morrisons, check their prices then go to Tesco?
You also say Morrisons offers don't beat Tesco offers, but that would only apply if both stores had the same offer on at the same time.
An example of offers both stores are currently running
Morrisons - Horlicks, 500g half price at £1.22 (normaly £2.45)
Tesco - Horlicks, 500g normaly £2.41 offer 2 for £3.
If you bought two of them at normal price Tesco would be 8p cheaper. But at the offer price Morisons is 56p cheaper.
Free range eggs, £2 for 15 at Morrisons, best price in Tesco £2.72 for 12.
I could go on, and might do if you want me to.0 -

It was a further comment - not a contradiction of my earlier post. It may just be a local difference in the stores - but I do not find the Morrisons veg lasts well - Tescos does, it is much fresher, and Aldi's does as well:D

I do indeed, and also Aldi;) I'm a proper MSE'r:D

Often they do, but sometimes they have those piddling little offer packs (usually on veggies) and I go and check Aldi and Tesco and they end up dearer than those not on special:D

I said that they RARELY beat Tesco on price - not never:D When they do I buy (but not branded/packaged stuff very often) and I also buy a couple of their items (seafood sauce is one) that are nicer than Mr T's own varieties and come in bigger and cheaper jars.
Free range eggs, £2 for 15 at Morrisons, best price in Tesco £2.72 for 12.
Get my eggs for £1.20 a dozen from the smallholding up the hill (HUGE dark brown ones from lovely Marans) - will be getting own chickens later in the year I hope:D

Not really - or was this thread only for praising Morrisons?"there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0 -

I've never used Aldi as I don't have one that close unfortunately.
I tend to eat basic foods, some organic, and veggie stuff. Day to day basic items appear for me better value in Morrisons so while I'll visit Tesco/Asda from time to time, it's more to just get the different range of items and I've found myself putting my standard weekly things back on the shelf due to prices.
Some things I bought this week that are on offer in both shops:
Quorn mince 88p vs Tesco at 2 for £3.00
Linda M sausages 94p vs Tesco £1
Yeo Valley yoghurts £1 vs Tesco £1.59.
I will be buying Robinsons Naturals, think that was down to £1 in Morrisons where Tesco have it at 2 for £2.50.
and value tissues 25p vs Tesco 39p.
As I say, it may just be the types of things I buy and I'm sure there are other things on offer in Tesco that might be cheaper that I'd want.0 -

Ah - the yoghurts are a pain because they have been up and down in both shops for some weeks - sometimes Tesco have been cheaper, other times it is Morrisons.;) Thanks for the heads up on Yeo Valley though - DS2 loves the Vanilla one and if we can get out of the village (snowed in at present and the Council seem to have forgotten to grit us at all since Saturday) then they will be on my Morrisons list for this week, along with their own brand one in Mandarin and whatever for DS1:D
Cannot comment on the other things, again they are things I don't buy. Very rarely buy much in the way of "brands" and the reason I go from one shop to another is the that things like washing powder/fabric conditioner is worth buying in bulk whilst on special offers and I check them both before buying.
Shame you don't have an Aldi - their veg offers seem to be very good lately - beat the others hands down and good quality as well.
As I said, if something I want is on offer in Morrisons and they are the cheapest then that is where I buy it: even veg sometimes - but bulk of shopping usually ends up Tesco across the year:o"there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0 -
I don't get this idea that Morrisons is cheaper either. We have recently had one open near us, it has taken over the Co-op's premises. It only has a small range and choice is limited..okay, that is the fault of the store size. I was actually shocked to find how much more expensive Morrisons was on many items. Not impressed with the fruit & veg, tomatoes I bought had turned black within 2 days. Romaine lettuce..£1 each at Morrisons, £1.19 for a pack of 2 at Tesco's. Other items had a short life too, along with the bread from the bakery. Only lasted a day before becoming very dry & hard & ending up in the bin. The mushrooms in their recent offer were a downright rip-off for the weight and the children pulled a face at the sausages, I think I would have been better with Tesco value at 48p for a pack of 8.
I will use Morrisons for some things, but mainly offers I suppose. For example, Nescafe 300g is on offer at Morrisons at a much better price than Tesco's. The meat I have tried at Morrisons seems better on the whole as they have an on site butcher, but oh so expensive.
As for the loyalty scheme, I don't find Tesco's costs me any more so the points and deals are a bonus. At the same time Morrisons were running the £25 voucher scheme, I was sent vouchers from Tesco's, 5x£4 off a £40 shop and 1 £6 off a £40 shop. total £26 off compared to Morrisons £25. This was also more flexible as you didn't lose out if you didn't need to spend £40 each week, you could just use the vouchers as & when needed and still receive 10% off, or more if you made sure you did your £40 shop on the week of the £6 voucher.0 -
I buy 2 lots of tomatoes at least a week from Morrisons all winter and never had one go black? (I actually like Asda plum tomatoes at the moment as they are still British, or were just before Christmas).
As for the bread, I only ever used to buy the Artisan breads in Morrisons and found them really good - now I make my own - which incidentally doesn't last half as long as it has no preservatives!!!
I do buy romaine though, so will check that in Tescos next time - is that price for 2 large ones?
Moggy - the Yeo valley offer was for the 4 pack of smoothie type yoghurts - but they did have Rachel's vanilla on offer in the large tub - the Rachel's one is I find actually better, I love Yeo Valley stuff but the fat free vanilla I find has a slightly more sour taste. Asda often have these brands on offer too0 -
The Morrisons in Aylesbury is very good both in terms of choice, quality and value for money. It has become our number one supermarket (previously Tesco).
They don't have a loyalty card, but they do a saving stamp card where you can add a couple of quid every now and then and cash it in at the end (£98 equates to £100). We haven't done that as we'd probably lose the stamps!0 -
Morrisons are the best supermarket out there, savings stamps, lots of old people, friendly shops (in my area), save pounds not points, and their pizzas and store made sandwiches are second to none as is the salad bar.
but sainsburys is a close 2nd now...Target Savings by end 2009: 20,000
