Updating a driving license. Help Please.

Ok, I should have done it some time ago. I moved here just over 4 years ago. I honestly didn't realise it was seen as so important. I have never had to produce it in the 33 years I have held it !

Anyway, tried to do it on line today, only changing address. But have a problem re ID. Sod's Law, my 10 year UK passport expired at the end of November and I haven't bothered to get a new one yet. Not a priority until I will Euromillions ! So I have no photo ID.

I will definitely keep a copy of my license (which I apparently have to cut up and return). Having seen, I think it was on The One Show, horror stories of people who had been driving for years with clean records having to resit driving tests as DLA did not accept their system could get things wrong which they had - hundreds of times apparently.

I am twitchy about the whole process. Words of reassurance and advice please :o

You don't have to do it online - there's a paper form you can fill in and send. Post Offices have them - larger ones anyway. Can't recall the details, but I think you may have to get someone to countersign the photo.

Nobody actually holds a UK license, the UK only issues a licence.
  • The UK licenses people, by issuing them with a licence.
  • Thanks people. I think I'm sorted. It was the ID which was the worry, but I found a link to www.direct.gov.uk/identitydocuments which helped, but boy, do they make it more complicated than it need be
