Nice eats in Rome

We are due to stay near the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Spanish Steps and would love recommendations for a nice place to eat nearby. Suggestions please.

Piazza Navona has loads of lovely restaurants in it - any one of them will do. Also great views while you eat of the square with all its fountains.

Please tell me where you found the best ice cream. Always willing to give it a try.

I wasn't too impressed with the restaurants in the Piazza Navonna, overpriced and nasty. I much preferred the places near the trevi fountain and in the streets in front of the Pantheon. The best - and cheapest - ice cream was near the trevi fountain too. But that's just my opinion.

I've always found that the best restaurants in Italy are the ones down little narrow side streets as opposed to being in a main tourist area. Much more authentic and you'll find Italians eating there.

Try to order off the Italian menu as opposed to the one in English. You wouldn't believe the difference that this can make in authenticity, price and portion sizes. :D

If youre staying at a hotel, ask the hotel staff - never had a bad meal yet!

The one disappointing meal I had in Rome was the one in the pricy restaurant we'd booked in advance as our end of holiday 'treat'. "Les Etoiles" was the name of the restaurant.

make sure you tried the gelato. there's a place near the Trevi Fountain with "San Crispina" or similar in it's name, that was LOVELY. Even the sandwiches from street vendors are nicer than the UK. We ate VERY well in Rome!

Have a look at hotels in that area (or for the one your staying at) and read the reviews on Tripadvisor. People often add restaurant reviews too - I know we did http://rome-hotels.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g187791-Rome_Lazio-Hotels.html
We stayed over the river in the Trastevere area and went to a fantastic (and cheap) pizzeria called La Fraschetta on Via San Francesco (web site lafraschetta.com) and the Piazza Santa Maria is a beautiful square to while away the hours people watching and the numerous side streets are filled with trattorias, bars and ice cream parlours.

We had ice cream from a few places and the ones around the Pantheon were excellent and good value.
    Have a fantastic time.
