Don't confuse with iPhone apps, totally different systems.

No, the iPhone runs on iPhone OS ( a chopped down version of Mac OSX, partially derived from UNIX), whilst the Pre runs on WebOS, partially derived from Linux. If you find programming easy, WebOS is apparantly very easy to programme for, if you can write javascript you'll have no problem on it.
Some clever people have even got the Linux versions of Doom and Quake to run on it, so expect a load of Linux stuff to move over soon...0
