I wouldn't say that the build quailty of Dells is horrific. We buy hundreds each year at work and have very few problems. They're a lot better than some of the really cheap brands.

I'd agree about the Lenovos being good though.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

My fathers Dell is 5 yrs old, its slow cause its old and needs some memory and well runs XP which SP3 is rather slow for older machines. Nothing gone wrong on it. I have a 6 month old studio 15 and the quality is taken from their XPS machines so wouldnt say its horrible. Might not be the best build in the world. but it works fine.

I have a sony vaio that cost about £1600, and a Dell that cost about £400. The Dell is probably about as good tbh, and is MUCH MUCH better value for money.
If you dont need one, get a laptop without a CD drive, much quieter, better battery life, don't get so hot :D.

If you're going to be using it for photos and graphic design work, it doesn't seem unreasonable to suggest that you consider a Mac.

Apple Pages is excellent for designing posters and whatnot, and it's very easy to use.
  • OP, unless you specify a budget then it's going to be difficult for anyone to give you an idea of what to look for.

First question, why a laptop? You get less for your money and you sacrifice the flexibility of being able to upgrade components further down the line with a laptop.

What I have interpreted from your post is that your requirements aren't going to necessitate anything towards high end of the market so there's no point in throwing money at something you're not going to take full advantage of.

Do you have in mind any software to use? Looks to me like its simple photo editing, which something like Paint.Net or Picassa are more than capable of handling and then a general Office package.

i want to get a laptop a Dell,
Why, in particular, a Dell
Also, you might want to consider - given your graphical requirements - an Apple laptop. Yes, you pay a premium (or considered such) but look at what you get: excellent build quality, excellent ergonomics, and a valid warranty

Have you considered using a PC as your main machine for conducting your business on and using a low spec laptop as a tool that you can take on your visits to clients. Not something as small or basic as a netbook but something that you can illustrate your designs with and do a small amount of basic admin work whilst at your clients e.g. a diary such as Outlook. You really don't want to be carrying around all your business data. I would think that the risk of damage/loss/theft would be to great.

Also a better spec PC would be easier to work at for any length of time.

Oh, and forgot to add, you also get an Operating System - Snow Leopard - that works
