Sat Nav to use in Australia & New Zealand

Hi

I am off to Oz/NZ in 12 weeks for a 6 week holiday. When I went this year for 6 weeks I ended up paying the car hire companies to hire a sat nav when I drove in Oz/NZ which was a rip off. I don't have a TomTom so can't just buy the maps. I would like one before I go as I need one straight away as I will pick a car up from the airport at 11pm when I arrive.

I know alot of people find driving over there easy, but I have NO sense of direction. Can anyone advise me where may be the best place to buy a sat nav may be.

Thanks

Rachel

If you buy a Tom Tom or one of the other major makers, you can download maps for anywhere in the world (For a charge) from the manufacturers website.

Alternatively buy one from ebay australia http://www.ebay.com.au/

Have a look at this one http://www.ebuyer.com/product/159765 it's cheap and the uk software with it works but not brilliant.

If you also look at https://www.pctaylor.com (think this is correct but check the comments & reviews for the ebuyer satnav). You can download & change the software to whatever you require. It seems difficult but is quite straightforward and lots of good advice on the pctaylor site.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi, I've been looking into this and my problem is that the sat nav's are working out quite expensive. I would really like a Tom Tom as these are what most car hire companies used when we went to Australia and NZ last year and I found them really reliable. As I understand it even if I were to borrow my parents Tom Tom sat nav, and buy the maps to download they are about £40 for NZ and £40 for Oz. The other alternative I was looking at was to hire one from zintech which have quoted £63.33 for the 6 weeks hire with up to date maps for Oz and NZ.

    What do people think?

just a thought - but if you bought the maps on SD card from Tom Tom - when you get back, you could sell them on ebay (to someone in a similar position) and get part of the cost back.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

Thanks, can you give me a link to what I would be looking for on Ebay. I'm not really 'up' on these sort of things and I think I'm getting confused about what SD cards are?

    Thanks

I don't think that there are any for sale on ebay at the moment for Australia or NZ - but you buy maps on SD card from Tom Tom (link to their site - http://www.tomtom.com/products/accessories/index.php?AccessoryCategory=9

Use it in your parent's Tom Tom during your trip - then sell it when you get back. At least the US ones sell pretty well...prices seem similar to the download prices and with an SD card you could sell it on.

I think you are quibbling over pennies - how much has the rest of the trip cost you?

This is money saving expert, and the whole trip has been done on a budget, e.g. last year I went to Australia for free using my Airmiles so if the difference is pennies, can you help me and show me how the difference is pennies between hiring one and getting one before I go that will have maps for Oz and NZ on them.

If money wasn't an issue I would not have posted on here. Just because I am going to Austrlia for 6 weeks doesn't mean I don't want to save what I can. Not a helpful comment really. . . .

Thank you for the useful comments so far.
