Any well cleaned plastic container will work - eg for strawbs get a plastic oil drum from local gaerage, cut holes in it with a stanley knife. paint it white with emulsion. viola free planter that will hold maybe 20 plants for 30lb of delicious fruit.Freedom is the freedom to say that 2+2 = 4 (George Orwell, 1984).

If you can source 6" spouting for free it can make for a great grow rack along a wall or fence. I've some strawberry plants along a fence in 3x4m lengths of spouting. Leave enough of space between plants to allow a runner from each to take root and transplant it out when its ready, once your plants are at the end of there usefullness take the spouting down, drop the soil mix out, wipe clean and refill and its good to go for another 3-4 years.Norn Iron Club member No 3530

If you can get hold of 4 tyres and stack them you can line them and fill with soil ( heavy duty garden bin liner with some holes in the bottom for drainage is perfect)
Then they make brilliant strawberry and potato planters.
Since garages have to pay to dispose of used tyres(and therefore pass the cost to you )you could always ask for yours back instead of paying for disposal when you get yours changed - if you are a car owner of course:TDFW £10923 (nov2014)0 -
I've given up on my potato barrels, they were useless, I get much better results from plain black rubble sacks. It's easier to earth them up, dig them out, and you can see how well the spuds are doing because they bulge against the side. Also you haven't got empty barrels sat around out of season either. When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.0
