are some sovereigns worth more than others? I wondered if there were any crucials years or something where less were made? My dad seems to think so..

I guess you won't lose out as long as you sell it higher than you buy it....

Yes, some are of extra numismatic value.
Not my speciality, wear is important. Proof coins carry a premium. Mint marks are also collectible.

    Mintmarks
The mintmarks used by the various mints are as follows:-

London None, Sydney S, Melbourne M, Perth P, Ottawa C, Bombay I, Pretoria SA.
These letters are found in the ground St.George is standing on, just above the date. Low mintages increase value, as do mintages that have gone into the melting pot.
Best to stick to gold content of coins and bars if investing.

I repeat, you will not lose out with gold.

And over the last year it has done quite nicely.

  • The 1/4oz 25pound coin is a bullion coin and its value is the gold price currently around £687 per troy oz. The 25pound Britannia is 22 carat 91.7 pure so the gold value is (687/4) x 91.7% = £157.5. Of course dealers would take a cut
  • Seen a few on eBay although it may be best to set a reserve & be sure to use recorded mail.

If you do send them by post, don't use recorded mail.
This service doesn't cover valuables, and in any instance the maximum compensation payable for lost items is £39.
For your coins you will have to use Special delivery.

I visit Chards http://www.chards.co.uk/forums/ in Blackpool
I don't know if they are the best deal available, but they have certainly given me better prices for sovereigns than I have seen advertised in the 'we buy gold' shops.

No I'm nothing to do with Chards, but please read the thread title
Where is the best place to try and sell gold coins?
How am I supposed to answer that?

I had read all the front page so clicked on page 1000 or something. Sometimes the old threads ar emore interesting because you can see how the predictions have gone. For example the post before mine.......
