Young drivers car insurance

My son passed both his driving test and pass plus within the last two months and we have been actively looking for a car for him.
After much searching, we eventually found a couple of suitable cars and then went on all of the comparison websites to get an idea of how much the insurance would be for him to see if he could afford to run the car. We were quoted £1246 on 1st January for third party fire and theft for a Ford Fiesta, so we decided to buy this particular car.
Next day (2nd) after putting deposit on car, we went back onto the website Compare the Market and went to finalise the insurance only to find that the cost had gone up to £3781.
When we spoke to Compare the Market, they advised that underwriters had increased price and they CTM had only quoted for insurance on the details entered, when we explained nothing had changed and would like to know why the price increase, they would / could not explain.
Could anyone tell me if this is legal as if we had known how much the insurance would actually be, we would not had bought the car.

Did you not 'save' the original quote? Generally I think they are valid for 30 days.0

try elephant.co.uk and tesco. I never find the deals on the price comparison sites.0

The comparison sites give a guide price and it's not unusual for the price to increase when you go through the acceptance as the information may have been transferred incorrectly, you might have made a mistake or it may ask more specific questions that affect the premium (Especially if you were obtaining the quotes in your name with your son as a named driver).
The comparison sites do have terms and conditions that explain this and cover them which you will have accepted.
It might be worth ringing the Insurer up directly and asking for a quote (You could also ask if they know why your quote increased so dramatically).0 -
save all original quotes, get a set of new ones, and if the new ones are crap use the old ones.
its a pain in the rear but your case shows why its neededthings arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back thenMercilessKiller wrote: »BH is my best mate too, its ok

don't go through the major comparison sites, look for companies who specialise in Young Drivers policies. They'll be clearly marked in the yellow pages.
Try Adrian Flux for a starting price, then use it to negotiate discounts with all the others.GREENS M'SHIP OFFER NOW CLOSED SO PLEASE DON'T ASK ME!Olympic Debt-free Challenge £2150/£11900 = 18.0%NOW INVESTIGATING AN ALTERNATIVE TO MY IVA - I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND ONE ANY MORE!0 -

I'd agree with these. My first policy was with Tesco, old Toyota Starlet was £450 fully comp. When I bought a new car and added my partner (who was a 25 yr old learner) elephant had the best quote. We're both classed as "high risk", I'm under 25 and at the time I took the policy out he hadn't passed his test. On a brand new Toyota Yaris fully comp insurance was £700.0 -

direct line and aviva are generally good with young drivers with the pass plus.
comparison sites are there to guide you and when you go to accept and confirm the info and or amend details it may change!I like to think I can help but its for discussion purposes only so if I get it wrong please feel free to correct me.0 -
Try putting an adult on the policy too - usually brings the quote down a bit, also fully comp is sometimes cheaper too - no idea why though!:j Almost 2 stones gone! :j
