Garlic went in today

Hi everyone

After months of lurking on greenfingered I've decided to dive in :-)

Today I hung a big window box on my fence and planted up 6 cloves of garlic (£1.99 in Homebase for a massive bulb) have 9 left over, might share the love and give some to my uncle.

Seeds from moreveg.com are expected tomorrow but as i'm in Scotland I don't know if I should sow any yet. Was thinking maybe leeks and onions but not sure ...... Are there any fellow Scots here?

Oh, Have any of you had to remove a hedge before? I'm going to take it out and use that land for my vegetable plot....... any advice appreciated..... it has to come out anyway so going to hire a wee digger (will be great fun) and hopefully the ground will be ok, hoping the hedge hasn't sucked the goodness out of it......

First post...how exciting... hope someone replies

Well done on your early start. I'm thinking of planting garlic. What soil did you use?
What if there is any wildlife living in your hedge? I'm not an expert but I have a feeling hedges can give shelter to lots of wildlife throughout the year.
  • hmmm likely there is wildlife but it has to go i'm afraid (resolved land dispute resulting in new fence being erected parallel to the hedge giving us an extra 6 feet) It's not being removed on a whim...

took YEARS to get resolved so i'm wasting no time getting the new divide up and has the added benefit of giving me extra veg growing space WOOHOO

Hi, I am new to the whole veg growing thing - nd like you am interested in growing garlic - im just not sure and sorry to sound daft, but is it just a case of planting the cloves from Garlic I currently buy from the supermarket or does it have to be bought from a Garden Centre?
    Thanks

You can occasionally get results from a garlic bulb bought from supermarket but you really need to buy seed garlic from garden centre as those should be suitable for cultivating in our climate and it'll tell you on the packaging what variety it is so that you get to know what ones do well or badly in your garden.

  • I live in Scotland as well and have had good results for a couple of years growing garlic from supermarket cloves. Saying that, I usually buy Scottish porcelain garlic from Tesco lol so maybe that's why...? I can't really get anything else to grow, my lettuce never comes up properly and out of everything else I've tried only rocket, spring onions, basil, parsley, beetroot and chives have produced any results lol, I'm hopeless :P

Mizuna seems really easy if you fancy trying that? You can just grow it in a grow bag and cut it like you would cress or rocket, which is what we do, or I understand you can let the plants get bigger then use them in stir-fries.

I'm new to veggie growing too, likewise I live in Scotland and would love to grow garlic. Is there a good time to start and should i use a certain type of soil. Although not sure how it will work out as ground frozen solid.
  • I can't even see the ground atm lol, still covered in hard snow.

I'm not sure how I manage to grow garlic without problems as I've always planted it in hard clay soil, in fairly wet conditions but it seems to be very adaptable lol, stick a few cloves in all over the place and see what pops up ;) it apparently likes frosty weather to start off in anyway... apparently... lol

tell me about it, haven't seen the ground since well before christmas, beginning to forget what grass etc looks like. As for liking frost, I can definitely assure that at the moment. Thanks for the info. hopefully I will be successful. Eat garlic loads so really is about time to grow my own

    Hi,

Is the Porcelain garlic you get at Tesco the one grown by the Really Garlicky Company? They're in Scotland too and I think that's the one they grow.

I'm a little south of the border from you, so maybe I could do well with that too. This will be my first go at garlic.

We're overflowing with rhubarb though, TEN plants at the last count :p
