Digital recorder - what discs ??

Father Christmas brought me a rather swish digital tv recorder. It has a built in DVD player and a facility to either record onto the hard drive or directly onto a disc.
Question, not sure what type of disc I need to buy to enable me to record films etc directly to a disc rather than the hard drive. I have a few discs scattered around the house but non of these seems to work ie Maxwell CD-R and Maxwell CD-RW. Any help greatly appreciated
