can't connect to internet on one computer , but can on others on the network

hello everyone! i seem to be having a spot of trouble with my wireless network. when if irst wet it up, everything was going great until just a few days ago. i was on a laptop checking email while my friend was on my desktop, which the wireless network runs off of. he suddenly says, "the internet cut out." i refreshed my page to see if this was the case, and it wasnt. i told him to try another site, but to no avail. however, my laptop could freely connect to any site i pleased and was working as intended. i found a similar result on another thread and tried going through some of the steps, but nothing worked. i tried bypassing the wireless router and going straight from my modem to my pc through an ethernet cable and it did not work, thought the modem said it was connected to the internet. i tried to ping 127.0.0.1 and it said "destination host unreachable. packets: sent =4, received =0, lost =0 <100% lost>. and my dhcp was enabled. any help on this is much appreciated. thank you in advance.

what equipment? Encrypted wep/wpa? SSID broadcasting?

Does the PC work if you plug it into the router with an ethernet cable and do a

    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew

if ping 127.0.0.1 doesn't work, reinstall tcpip
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • okay so something weird happened. i went to reinstall tcp/ip and during the installation, the computer froze. i just sighed and restarted. when i came to my desktop, my AIM friends list came up. i dont know what happened, but it is now fixed. thanks albertross!

Periodic disconnection of a laptop from the router could be alot of things, I recently found out that one of my laptops didn't support WPA only WEP, as a result it would try to negotiate with the router secure a connection which it would work with then fail to connect, renegotiate and start over.

You cold check the documents that accompanied your laptop to see if this is your problem. Otherwise look at signal strength.

It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.
