do you have any plans for a celebration when you are debt free?

I am a looong way away but my husband and I have been saying for a while that we would love to go on a proper safari holiday.
Obviously we could not justify this with our humongous debt but I would love to have this as an aim for when we have paid off all of our credit cards.
And yes we would save up for it first and not just put it on a credit card :p
So does anyone else have something as a goal?

    Hi Dib-dab,

I am so sad that my first 'treat' would be to save enough money to cover six months worth of bills for if disaster strikes. I would love to not have to go back to work after I have had the baby (currently baking), so a little bit of a safety net would enable me to stay off without worrying about things.

I don't really like holidays anyway, and I have certainly learnt my lesson about the need for 'stuff'!

    Hi there dib-dab,

I know what you mean about having a treat when you become debt free.

I would love to go to the Brazil Carnival, in Feb 2011. Aiming for a debt free date of October this year or at the latest December 2010.

Skintgypsy you are so right that should definitely be a priority. My husband's company paid him late this week and I haven't been able to sleep for worrying about what we would do if it was much later or never at all! I don't want to feel like this anymore. Life was much nicer when I had my head in the sand. But I'm sure it would have been worth living if I had kept it there much longer!
So I change my mind too - first to save up an emergency fund and then the nice holiday fund!

Good luck BabyBetty - hope you get to your carnival!

    Thanks dib-dab,

I agree with skintgypsy, an emergency fund is a must. I am a contractor and missed out on more than two payments in 2009. Luckily I had a cushion so was not that worried. In the past I would have freaked out about something like that. Because there is always a gap between ending one contract and starting the next I find I need a buffer to cover my bills.

Seriously - when I'm debt free I'm going to have a camping holiday by the sea in a little place in Wales called Mwnt. Cheap cheerful and it's a place I've always wanted to go to.

But really just getting debt free is such a treat and achievement on its own.

I've been "debt free" since 20/11/09, and right now I'm working on building my emergency fund. I have my divorce cost saved for when that comes in, as that was the ultimate thing in my mind.

On debt freedom day, I treated myself to a Burger King. :o

Since then I've spent probably less than £150 on 'me'. The rest goes towards my savings goals (I have a spreadsheet that tracks the goal amounts, percentages achieved and so on).

My ultimate 'reward' will be to move into my own place again. :)
