Downloads slowing down

For years, as part of my job, I have been downloading html-based articles from on line newspapers onto my harddisk. This has always been easy and fast. File/Save Page as... and Voila! However, it now takes my computer up to 30 seconds to complete the download process and the procedure is definitely getting longer. There are no viruses on the computer, which runs XP Home with all updates installed. I use a Netgear router (with an Ethernet connection) and my ISP is Virgin. Any suggestions?
