I would certainly go down the fantasy share dealing route first, just to gain experience of the markets. I was looking to invest in some shares last year and decided have a play to on a fantasy share site to see if I had a hidden talent, I didn't!, and decided to leave it to the experts and invest somewhere a lot safer.
The Fantasy share site I used was bullbearings . co . uk, I personally would suggest Bonds and ISA's, shop around though...
If you are still a student try e-financial careers they offer good virtual trading games or wall street survivor, best way to get some practise also if you really are serious about it look into Benedix a recruitment company that offers good training tools for investors and very good advice best I have come across. They will also put you in contact with the trading and investors club a great source of knowledge.
Hope that helps
When buying shares, ask yourself, would you buy the whole company?
Only buy something that you'd be perfectly happy to hold if the market shut down for ten years.
