I want to dye my hair red, (it's dyed black at the moment usin a semi-permanent). Just wondering if anyone can recommend a good red hair dye that is bright and fades slowly.

I'm afraid red hair dyes are notorious for fading quickly!
When I used chemical colours, I tried Herbal Essences, Schwarzkopf Live and some other box dyes I don't even remember because they weren't very bright.
Maybe you should wait for the black dye to wash out before attempting a new colour...?Cogito, ergo sum.0 -
I'd say salon colours fade less then home colours from my (nearly 15 year!) experience. The brighter the red, the more it fades. Try a coloured shampoo? John Freida is supposed to be good, but I've never used it as I dislike being corenered into using one product for the rest of my life! as long as the fade is even I don't think it looks so bad.0

What about henna?0

Henna is good (it also fades though unfortunetly) but be aware once you start using it, it has to grow out of your hair before you can use salon or home care dyes as they do not mix. The henna stops the salon and home dyes from taking. Can be frustrating if your hair grows slowly! But on the up side, most people find henna leaves your hair in good condition, better then that of home dyes or salon dyes.0

Another vote for henna here. It leaves your hair in really good condition and Body Shop have a Raging Red and Revved Up Red colour that is pretty intense (leave it on for 4-5 hours).
The good thing is that when it fades it doesn't really leave root line (unless you are very blond or grey). It fades rather than grows out.
It's also pretty cheap and you can mix up just enough to do your hair length.0 -
I have tried quite a few permanent reds over the years and, as others have said, most fade badly if your hair is in poor condition and with how much you wash and rinse. I have settled on Schwartzkopf Live 'Red Passion' which is the best for not fading, and I get a lot of compliments on the colour!

To wash I use Schwartzkopf Gliss colour shampoo (pound shop) and matching leave-on conditioner (Bodycare) which are super gentle and very cheap! I have found all the shampoos designed for red hair are very harsh, and you lose a lot of colour using rinse off conditioner. I also use Batiste dry shampoo between washes which again saves me losing colour too fast.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -
Live XXL is pretty good for vibrant red that stays red for at least 3 weeks (unlike some that turn orangey after one or two washes!)0

My Sister Uses Live XXL also,
she says that it lasts a lot more then any others she has used and she also only uses special shampoo and conditioner for red hair that she says helps keep it brighter for longer0 -
Unfortunatly I don't use Henna anymore since I tried bleaching my hair ages after I'd last put henna on. The result was horrible and I ended up having all my hair cut off. So, because I chop and change hair colors, I'd rather not risk henna again.0

I really rate Feria for the condition it leaves my hair in and the intense red. I tried the XXL but I didn't like it as it faded too quickly. The only thing you need to remember is to add the colour booster to the mixture BEFORE you use it! So many times I've forgotten and the results are still good but they can be brighter when using the colour booster in the pack.0
