Thanks for re-drilling this into my head! :)...If only money grew on trees eh?

It does - it's called forestry.

Or market gardening if you want to eat things on trees.

Hmmmm true, But the rewards in Business are great. The thing I hate about the smaller independent sandwich shops are that they don't turnover as much as a Subway in the same area for example. But don't have to pay fees/costs to the franchise.

Turnover is vanity, profit is sanity

    Duncan Bannatyne, I think.

(I see wuckfit beat me to it.)

I think the best thing is to merge these two threads, especially as they were started by the same poster.

Amit, there's nothing wrong with a dream. HOWEVER, to make THIS dream come true you are going to have to take lots of small steps, and be ready to learn all along the way. You might also find you want to change the dream: DS1 was determined to become a Games Workshop manager when he was in his teens, and I think if they'd been willing to employ him at 16 he might have left school and gone to work for them. A levels and University broadened his outlook ...

Get the catering experience. Get some cash saved (a LOT if you want a Subway franchise). Consider why Subway is so attractive to you (can't fathom it myself, but there you go ...) - and if it's because you think it's a way to get rich quick, think again! If you look at any of the threads on this board about catering - tea and coffee shops / chip shops / trailers and your own - you'll see that EVERYONE says it's hard work for little reward, and those with experience say it with feeling! :rotfl:

LOL even if the bank would lend you £125k most franchises state you can't buy unless something like 50% of the capital is your own cash!!!
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.
  • I would advise not to do this, the education is very important.

Subway resales, why are they selling? You have to ask, my good friend had one and paid min 100K, but it was her own money and she trained in the USA for a few months before she could even open. If you do accept remember you are locked in to a deal of 1-10 years depending. Also you have to check who owns the equipment in the building as this can cost around 40K, you may buy in and find it empty or worse leased.

The local sandwich shops in my town (small, touristy town) actually all do a lot better than the Subway, which is always deserted ;)

  • I would simply echo what everyone has already said, before diving into a franchise, do your research they are expensive and are certainly not a guaranteed success.

Surely this is common sense when looking over the financials of the business anyway? A lot of Subway stores lease equipment and buy on HP, but I've not come accross a scenario in which a store was purchased only to find the equipment wasn't included in the sale!

And can I also follow on from the advice others have given, do your research and lots of it.
