Fruit trees in the supermarkets yet?

When I lived in my last house I bought quite a few fruit trees from Netto, Morrisons and Lidl. They were surprisingly successful, and I wouldnt mind getting some more. I have been looking out for them in the supermarkets since autumn but havent seen any this year, yet I was sure it was autumn/winter time.

Has anyone seen any?

I have been to our local garden centre and found out that an apple tree will set me back £28. Admittedly they are very good quality and container grown rather than bare root, but in my new house I have a much larger garden and want to create an orchard at the bottom of the garden where it widens out. Therefore I would like a quite a few trees.

They were in store in the autumn. However some Lidl stores don't sell the full range of products so you have to go to their website and put your postcode in to find the nearest big store. Lidl seem to know they are doing well out of gardening stuff so they had a lot of it in last year.

I don't know about the other 2 sorry as I rarely use them due to their location.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)
  • Just had an email. Lidls are getting their fruit trees in on 25th February. Apples, pears, cherries and plums
    £5.99 each or 2 for £10.
  • My local tesco extra had them in earliar this week, 6.99 each I think
  • They came into ALDI today - I went tonight and they had about 2/3 of a crate left - apparently they had 2 crates this morning, so you may need to go tomorrow if you want to get any.
I got a conference pear, a bramley apple, and a cox's orange pippin. They also had morello cherries, president plum, elstar apples and golden delicious.
    All are £3.99
  • aldi had some in at about £4 and tesco's for about £5.

a few years ago i got a pear tree for £1.75 - bargain! has not fruited yet as very small and last year i had to dig near its roots so it was unhappy but i am hopeful for this year :)
it's nice to be important but more important to be nice!! :kisses3:
  • I went to aldi to buy a plum tree yesterday afternoon but all they had was 2 apple ones left.

On asking I was toild they would get some more out in an hour so went back this morning and the rack was full off apple, pear, cherry & the plum tree I wanted.

So if unsuccessful yesterday it may be worth another visit.

Shame you can't phone the store though to check stock.
  • Will these be suitable for sitting in a pot on a patio?
  • i got some blackberry and raspberry bushes from morrisons £1.99 each, last week.

Your conference is self-fertile. However, Bramley is a tripoid, which means that you need two other trees to pollenate it. Is there another apple tree of the right flowering period nearby?

As far as I can see when i have looked, none of the supermarkets tell you what root stock the trees are growing on, so it is impossible to say.

Definately do not try growing anything on M9 in a pot as the root systems are too weak. M26 or M27 should be OK.

Many of the others will produce a much larger tree and take longer to fruit.
