if i supply the new tap (single hole mixer type) what kind of quote would be a reasonable amount to pay to take out the old tap and install the new one?
(I am in glasgow)
also should i be looking for a plumber or is someone from the small ads under diy- that says plumbing, joinery etc...alright to use for this job?
thanks for any advice

Can you do it youself? You might have to buy a special spanner, but it would be the cheapest way.

i looked it up on the how to pages but i'm afraid it mentioned torches etc. (not to mention difficulty working in cramped places)
i'm pretty bad at diy anyway and i think this one is too much for me.

It could well depend on your particular area.

I'm on the outskirts of London & paid £50 to have my kitchen tap changed last year.Same thing as you are looking to have done. This was the plumbers basic rate for an hours work. It took him a bit longer than that as it was really awkward for him to get to because of the way the kitchen has been fitted. He didn't charge me any extra though.

I've used this guy on previous occasions as he is corgi registered & very trustworthy & doesn't charge over what he tells you at the outset what the job should cost even if things don't go smoothly.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

I did exactly the same a year ago and it also cost me £50ish.

Try here http://www.ultimatehandyman.co.uk/diy_plumbing_replacing_basin_taps.htm. I think the Regs have just changed or are about to change on taps, so may make any quote that little bit more expensive.
