Keep carving knifes well hidden!!
I was really looking forward to Xmas, specially because last Xmas was spent studying as I had exams in January. But now I'm feeling really low, in-laws (2 adults and 2 kids) were supposed to come over from abroad and spend 2 weeks with us, but they had some kind of financial problem and will not be coming. My family all live abroad as well and they have made other plans now because I said that in laws were coming and couldn't have everyone at the same time. And the icing on the cake is that OH has just been made redundant!
I think Xmas will be the two of us anda dog (not ours, we will be taking care of it)... OH isn't very enthusiastic about Xmas anyway so... I'm feeling quite sad, seems like I will not be having Xmas for a second year in a row!Honorary Northern Bird bestowed by AnselmI'm a Board Guide and volunteer to help get your forum questions answered and keep the forum running smoothly on Special Occasions, Green/Ethical, Motoring/Overseas/UK Travel & Flood boards, it's not part of my role to deal with reportable posts. in my family these days for birthdays and xmas we tend to try and buy 'experiences' (in our case, it's generally a trip to the theatre) rather than 'stuff', as frankly we all have far too much 'stuff' and this way we feel really excited, rather than deprived.
think there is a thread somewhere on MSE with tips for getting cheap theatre, too - we have certainly used the travelex £10 national theatre and the half price ticket booth offers (both london, sorry).
guess someone might quibble that even the theatre has a carbon footprint - but I'm going to see Porgy and Bess with my mum on Friday as a late birthday present, and I'm well chuffed!"The Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's need, but not every man's greed" - Ghandi0 -

:xmassmile Hey there!
i have copied some tips from https://www.sustainableworkplace.co.uk (which i manage for my work, just to be upfront):
12 WAYS TO HAVE A HAPPY, GREEN CHRISTMAS!
Presents
Create a token for a special experience, like a theatre trip, instead of a product. (Often official theatre tokens don't work for the money saving theatre options)
How about gifts of locally made, or fairly traded, organic or energy saving products?
For green enthusiasts, there are lots of books packed with ideas to save the planet - 'Save Cash and Save the Planet' is a good one.
Take your own re-usable shopping bags with you when you do your Christmas shopping.
If you are buying presents for work colleagues, or for 'the person who has everything', you could cut your stress and set a 'secret santa' gift limit of £5. Or you could buy a present that helps workers fight poverty from http://www.waronwant.org/Alternative+Gifts+10363.twl
Food and drink
A locally produced traditional Christmas dinner uses seasonal British produce and saves 24,000 'food miles'.
Remember to recycle or re-use your aluminium foil, buy loose vegetables to reduce packaging, and start a compost heap for the sprout-peelings! For more help with recycling (including links to your local facilities) see https://www.recyclenow.com
Don't over-buy food at Christmas - the average family wastes 1/3 of the food they buy.
Cards, lights & energy
If we recycled all the UK's Christmas cards (rather than the current 10%), that would help save a quarter of a million trees. Why not set up a Woodland Trust collection point at work?
Or, why not send e-cards instead - http://www.worksmart.org.uk/ecard/create.php?f=cards/bellgreen.jpg&template=template_general, or FOE or Greenpeace have them too.
Don't forget to turn the lights and all IT equipment off over Christmas. If you are not sure if things need to be left on, check - usually, they don't! A PC left on over the holiday will produce at least 13kg of CO2, enough to fill 3 inflatable garden santas!
If you are at work on the last day, talk to colleagues and agree who will switch off all other equipment before leaving for the holidays. A photocopier left on powersave mode still uses 90% of its normal energy, equivalent to 14kg of CO2 over the holidays."The Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's need, but not every man's greed" - Ghandi0 -
OOOOOO I'm liking that idea...............you could decorate with glitter and stuff!!! :j:j:j:j Tie wire around the top and hang in trees lighting up your driveway
:o
I used them as just plain ones the other night for our Firework BBQ, so must get round to decorating them for christmas nowHonorary Northern Bird bestowed by AnselmI'm a Board Guide and volunteer to help get your forum questions answered and keep the forum running smoothly on Special Occasions, Green/Ethical, Motoring/Overseas/UK Travel & Flood boards, it's not part of my role to deal with reportable posts. My husband decided last year that he REALLY didn't want anything for christmas. What he suggested that we got him was a list of books FROM THE LIBRARY for his christmas present. And thats what we did! One of the books, was Al Gore's, 'An Inconvenient Truth'.I don't want to make money, I just want to be wonderfulMarilyn Monroe0
