Refund Rights

I purchased some flooring tiles from a real shop, the floor has been layed and I'm left with one package of tiles left over. I purchases 6 boxes for £600 just yesterday and now want to return the one I havent used. The retailer is saying that they cannot give me a full refund and will take a "handling charge". I assume this is for the 2 minutes it took them to put the tiles in my car. What are my rights? Am I entitled to a full refund? There is nothing wrong with them. I paid on credit card so worst comes to the worst I can contact them to see what they can do.

I believe that the general rule is that the store doesn't have to give you a refund at all, snd if they do so its a gesture of goodwill. And a credit card company won't do anything because you changed your mind or bought box too many

Since theres nothing wrong with them, you don't have a right to a refund. The company can offer a refund as a goodwill gesture, but they don't actually have to take them back off you.

In this situation your rights are exactly the same as if you bought half a dozen eggs at tesco an tried to return two !!

There is no right of return for anything bought in person unless the item is faulty or below standard. As others have said many will take things back as a guesture of good will but this is at their own expense.

  • £600 is a lot of money, personally I would of calculated how many i needed. Im sure having 1 whole box too many is a costly mistake?:P

any decent retailer would give you a refund
if the goods are unopened and can be resold

many tile/diy places do so as long as its within 30 days

where did you buy them from????

  • The refund will be subject to their terms and conditionas of sale. Usually this is printed on the receipt / retailers website / posters in the store. If their policy is to refund in 28days unopened good with receipt (which is the most common policy) you can get a refund as this refund policy forms part of the contract of sale.

If there is no such policy they can say what they like and you have no choice but to except it.

    Sense is not common.

As you have been told here - you are not entitled to a refund because you have changed your mind.

A handling charge covers their admin costs and warehouse storage etc, and is also meant as an offer putter.

But, its normally between 10-20% of the goods - so at £100 a pack of tiles you will get back £80-90 - surley this is better than keeping them?

And your credit card company will not be interested in helping either.

Thanks for your advice guys. It was from these people here http://www.classicalflooring.co.uk not a national trader. There are no terms and conditions so I'll have to accept what he says. You would have thought after I'd given him £600 worth of trade he would have been happy to give me a refund on one box. I'll just have to ask really nicely then.

Personally I would keep them as it will be sods law that you drop something onto the tiles and one cracks.

I know its alot of money but how much would it cost to redo the entire floor if you couldn't get a replacement?
