Disadvantage Areas Relief

I have just read an article in my local paper about a man who has just discovered that he was entitled to 'Disadvantage Area Relief' Which is a relief from Stamp Duty Land Tax. Depending on which area you live, you may be entitled to this. HM Customs website has a post code checker, and we come under it.
But we wondered if anyone knows the date it started, and whether we would be eligible to make a claim, I moved to my property in June 2001.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It came into effect not long after June 2001, but certainly not before. I bought a flat in August 2001 and had to pay full stamp duty, but my buyers didn't have to pay when I sold in 2003.

Is there a list of disadvantged areas? I noticed a while ago that some houses in a town near me were being advertised as exempt from stamp duty. I was a bit puzzled as other houses weren't.

If you look down the page that I linked to, there's the question "Where can I find out whether the property I am buying, or dealing with on behalf of my client, is within one of the designated areas?"
