Best Plug-in USB-based Hard Drive

In today's Sunday Times they recommend the Maxtor OneTouch 300GB III hard drive for back up secure storage. They are quoting £134 as the likely cost which seems a bit more than some others I have seen recently. Is this the best one to go for?

I have a Maxtor One touch and its been totally reliable, maybe you could save a bit by getting one with a smaller capacity.

Go to http://svp.co.uk/ and get a Maxtor hard drive and a caddie. 5 min job to install into the caddie and includes a USB lead. Put a copy of your C: drive on one partition and if your drive fails you just swap the new drive into your machine without having to reinstall all your programs etc.

Yes, this is what I did, then you can install whatever size HD you want and most importantly, it is easily upgradable.

dabs.com is offering the Maxtor described above for £120 including VAT but they also have this one for £82 which seems to have the same capacity. Is there a major difference between them and would I notice it for occasional use?

I have a Maxtor one touch drive and it's been fine. Having said that, Maxtor have a pretty poor reputation. If I were buying again I'd go for a Seagate.
