Getting caught doing 35mph in a 30mph zone then being told to pay £15 to a domestic violence or sexual assualt victim is just plain odd and makes no sense. I have no problem with my taxes being used to provide services to victims of all sorts of problems in life, but a direct link between these two issues is just bizzaire.

I have a much better idea. When a man hits a woman, we should take his car, watch, TV, audio system and computer, put them on eBay and give the proceeds to his victim. Oh, and put him in jail for a bit too. With a big sign around his neck that says "I hit women".
    excellent.

but I understand the gov's rationale: middle england is well-placed to provide funding for victim support - so go on, all y'middle- class types! transgress on the road by 2mph and pick up the tab for miscreant bahaviour!!

TBH, I am heartily sick and tired of lab, with all of its different wheezes to screw money out of 'normal' taxpayers ( and this is coming from a lab supporter for over 20yrs!).

Same as it always has been- if you agree to the offence you can pay up, if you disagree you can opt to have your case heard at magistrates.

I think most people just pay up.

I agree that it is an easy tax for govt, but disagree with those that paint themselves as completely innocent victims of this money making system.

Irrelevant really whether the payment is £60 or £75, the fact remains it is completely avoidable if you choose- don't commit an offence ;)

Well, if they were innocent, they're now guilty in my eyes for being damn lazy :D

  • Just as always, it is tax revenue. It will not go to victims of crime just as 1% on National Insurance doesn't go to the NHS. If it was announced as tax on the motorist to help bail out future generations I'd live with it.

Speaking as someone who was fine £60 and awarded 3 penalty points on my otherwise blemish-free licence for the heinous crime of drifting up to 35mph (at the bottom of a gentle slope I might add) all I can say is That the only way to beat them is to keep to the limits. It's more important to do this on wide roads and dual carriageways - that's where the cameras will be. If you must speed do it in the estates or near schools (tic) no cameras.

Anyway, I have cost the Police much more than £60 since my fine 10 years ago. Makes me feel better.

Why dont they just spread out the cost of what's needed so everyone pays a little extra rather than a few odd schemes whereby some pay lots more for no apparent reason???

I don't doubt it's a valid cause etc, but why hit the motorist?? - seems to be disconnected....

Anyway surely this story is fake, I can't believe governemnt really thinks like this????? (oh god it's true isnt it?!)

Will aparently be ring fenced so all monies received will go towards victim support schemes (of course in a round about way that doesn't matter as it just allows govt to reduce central funding to those projects).

No no no! People still not getting it!

It is not hitting 'the motorist'. It is hitting those who choose to commit offences.

As for everyone paying up- that is the idea. Those convicted in court (of a variety of offences) already pay victim surcharges. This scheme is merely extending the victim surcharge requirement to those who commit an offence but are dealt with by way of FPN rather than court action.
