yahoo via windows mail

hello, I am trying to send emails from a yahoo account via windows mail

I have entered POP and STMP port numbers in line with the yahoo account - but have just received the following error message

Account: 'none', Server: 'pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR popgate unknown command', Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC18

any ideas appreciated....I have checked the port number and it is definitely 995

cheers

Are you trying to send from an environment that you have sent from before? - eg your home connection.
If not, are you at say at mates house using a wireless network you have not used before?
If it's the later then you will need to change your outgoing SMTP server to reflect the ISP of the connection you are using. So for example if you are using a Tiscali internet connection your outgoing SMTP server will need to be tiscali.co.uk

I don't use Windows mail but from checking online it might be worth making sure that you have SSL turned on and SPA (Secure password authentication) turned off in the POP3 settings.
  • hi - no I cant try in old environment - the other laptop broke - hence ne one

I am at home on standard ireless so dont think thats the issue

going to be a setting somewhere then. Check all your SMTP stuff as it's easy to make a mistake. Also check what previous post says re SSL and authentication settings.
  • thanks p and garry

Well it's progress in the right direction :D

POP3 is used for receiving while SMTP is used for sending so this time it's the SMTP/Sending settings you need to confirm.

From the Yahoo site I think the following settings should work:

    Server: smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk
    SSL: Yes
Authentication: Yes (but again turn SPA off if it's on)
Username and Password: As for POP3
Port: Should have automatically changed from 25 to 465 when you selected SSL
  • still no joy....when I click on send receive, nothing happens, not even an error message even though I have 30 messages in my outbox

    any brainwaves?
  • Subject '', Account: 'none', Server: 'smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '250 8BITMIME', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 250, Error Number: 0x800CCC7D

played asround - clicked send only and the above error message I received

Why don't you upgrade to Windows LIVE Mail. It sets up the correct values for Yahoo mail accounts automatically
