Need to access files from old laptop hard drive

Hi,

Hope someone can help. My old HP laptop (18 months old ZD7000 series) motherboard burnt out during a back up. After a long debate with HP, I have been given a new laptop (a DV8000 series) and they have also returned my old hard drive.

However, it seems to be a different type to my new latop drive bays and I cannot get it to fit. Have also tried to put it into my work thinkpad and it looks exactly the same but wouldn't quite fit (didn't want to force it either!!)

Any idea how I can get the data from the old hard drive onto my external drive or should it fit and I'm just not doing it right?

Any advice gratefully received.
