VW polo gearstick

Yesterday I was driving on the Motorway, as I pulled into a service station the car would not come out of fifth gear. I managed to park it and went off to the loo. When I came back I could not get it into neutral, the gearstick was moving about rather stiffly but I could not get it to go.

After calling out Green Flag, I took the gaiter off and saw there was a little circuit with a switch, I pressed this and nothing happenend. The I tried to retart the engine and something electrical seemed to happen. The clock reset itself and trying it again a few minutes later the gears worked fine. I have tried to replicate this problem but cannot although I have noticed that every once in a long while the car will slip out of fifth gear

Edit, I cancelled Green flag and drove it for a further 200 miles and nothing occured

Its a old car, 1995 so its done quite well., Before I take to a garage I just wanted to see if anyone has any ideas? Thanks

I dont think the circuit has anything to do with the problem - its probably just the switch for the reversing lights.


I suspect the problem is mechanical in nature. You may have dislodged something when you tried to start the car and that freed up the gears so you could get it into neutral.
