Connecting new PC to old???

Hi all

I wonder if you can help me. I want to connect my 2 PC's togther so I can surf the net in different rooms.

PC 1 (This PC) - is a pentium 3, with ntl cable bband, using firefox.
PC 2 (other PC) - is a Dell pentium 1.

Had to upgrade to this PC when I went for bband as couldnt install ntl installation discs on PC 2. (needed pentium 2 or higher for installation).

Can I ask -

Can I run a cable from PC 1 to PC 2 to give me the same internet access? Theyre about 20 feet away from each other but in different rooms. If not, is there a cheap way of doing it?

Do I have to install the ntl installation discs on PC 2 and therefore cant use?

Questions may be ridiculous but bear with me, i'm a bit behind with the tekky stuff!

Both PC's are second hand, and I couldnt spend money installing extras.

Many thanks for your help.

you need Lan cards in each PC and a CAT5 crossover cable

you can get both off ebay for next to nothing :)

then set up Internet Connection sharing on both PC's

Cheapest Way would be a Crossover Ethernet Cable.

Set the main PC as a proxy.
  • Probably best to use a wireless router to route the bband connection to both PC's. You can probably use a cable from the router to the new one, and put a wireless card in the old one.

It's pretty straightforward, and can be done for <£50 :) Make sure you set passwords on the router and wireless PC though, but this should be explained in the manual. Also, check the router is compatible with NTL (it should be). PC World are okay at this sort of equipement, though I hate recommending them :D.

    Hope this helps :)

{edit} Ah, just saw your bit about not spending any extras, sorry !

    Thanks guys

Is a CAT5 crossover cable the same as a crossover ethernet cable?

Do I need LAN cards for both of these cables??

Cant take to shop to install anything (cant spend), so it'll be me soing this, and I cant put things into a PC - havent got a clue!

    Thanks

Cant put one of those cards in PC 2. Besides that I actually couldnt do it, the space to add extra things is filled up (such technical jargon!), had to lose the soundcard to add a connection to the net, and usb port for printer. Soundcard was taken out cos you physically cant put anything else inside.

ITs a Dell, I think its a really old one.

Is there any other way it can be done? Will it make a difference if I cant install ntl installation disk on PC 2?

    Many thanks

I cannot see any way of doing what you want then unless someone else can think of something

Would suggest you take out the cards you put in to make space for the lan card - connect your printer to your new pc (you can still print to it from your old one via the lan) - and you'll be to access the internet as well from your old pc - so you don't need that card either.

    hope that helps
