Video sender not connected to TV at source

I want to have an independent TV function in another room but don,t have an aerial connection in that room. Reception is such that freeviw can only be obtained with a rooftop aerial. In the main living room I have a rooftop aerial connection that is used for the TV/Virgin Media connection.

Can I split the incoming aerial connection and connect the new feed to a freeview box and video sender to transmit to a TV in the other room?

Hello Artha, I am not an expert but will share my knowledge which may be wrong. What comes off your aerial is VHF and I do not think you can re-transmit it. What you need to do is to connect the video sender to the video out of your tv or you can try the out put of the box(virgin, sky) that goes to your tv.

I think I understand what you mean - split the aerial feed in the loft, to a freeview box, in the loft. Take the scart from the freeview and transmit it over the sender to the TV. Use the IR link on the sender to control the freeview in the loft. I like it! (I may need to do similiar as building work may cut of my aerial cable route to my kitchen TV)

Anyway back to the point, splitting the aerial, yes you can put a 'Y' splitter in BUT the two things on the feed may interfere with each other(most TV wall outlet sockets have isolation transformers in now to avoid this) so I would split using an aerial amplfier with (of course) at least two outputs. You can get ones with adjustable gain knob which I would go for and start with it cranked down. The amp will isolate the two things and stop one stealing all the signal. I have found most amplifiers work fine on Freeview signals.

just re-read and see that the aerial feed is into the lounge not loft, doesn't matter my advice still applies.. :)

Thanks for the thoughts. It looks as though in theory it will work. Just waiting for someone who might actually have have done it in practice to point out any pitfalls. I've spoken to people at Maplin and PCworld but there was a sharp intake of breath and the comment that you need to connect through a TV to transmit a signal. I can't see why but am now a bit nervous about trying it

I have a freeview box connected to an aerial which then feeds a video sender. No TV involved at that stage.

Video receiver on the TV gets the signal and works fine, just a short distance mind you
We all evolve - get on with it

Are you not confusing signals? Virgin media boxes use 'cable' that come from outside in the ground (Nothing to do with aerials on the roof or in the loft)

Correct Rik, my thoughts as well.

Is this an Aerial connection or a Virgin Media connection?

Sorry for the confusion. In the lounge I have a conventional aerial socket and a Virgin Media cable connection. The conventional aerial socket is connected into the system so that when I want to record something on the Virgin Media connection I can then watch a terrestial channel. Its the terrestial input that I want to split, connect a freeview box and send the output to the dining room/second lounge or even the kitchen so that it is independent of what is being viewed/recorded in the lounge either as cable or conventional

Why can't you add a freeview box to your existing system (aerial in/out) and hook up a sender to the output of the freeview box?
Try saying "I have under-a-pound in my wallet" and listen to people react!

Well when you split the signal youll be halving the signal strength. It 'might' work fine but id recommend putting an amplifier at the 'split' ~

Then youll need a freeview box and a 'video sender'
Bear in mind the quality wont be as good as if the entire thing was wired (You can only send 'composite' signals which are the lowest quality)
