TV turns itself off

My Sony LCD TV is about 3 yrs old now and for the last few months has started tuning itself off.
It's driving me mad - you just get to an interesting bit on TV and it sudenly freezes then switches off onto standby. If I wait a couple of seconds, it will then come back on. It's almost like there is a loose connection or something.
Does anyone know what is going on or what I can do to correct it?

Unfortunately that is quite a common problem with Sony TV's, an engineer is needed to fix the fault I'm afraid.

    Thanks! Inactive, for your reply.
I thought Sony was a really good make. I wouldn't have bought one had I known.
  • We've got a brand new Sony that does this too.

So do a lot of people, pity they don't make their own tv's and lots of other stuff too!

There was a time when I would never consider any make other than Sony for a TV, they were streets ahead of the competition, reliability wise.

However they seem to have lowered their standards over recent years, and now are no better than the rest IMO.

I made certain when I purchased my most recent TV a Philips 42" Plasma that I got it from John Lewis with their 5 year warranty, 3 years on and it is still all OK.

We had this problem a few years ago with a new tv. I spent more time back in the repair shop than it did in our house. They would repair it and then have it on test for a few days then bring it back to us. The more times it went back the longer they would keep it on test. Some times the repair would last a few days some times it would break again the day it was bought back to us. Eventually we asked for a new tv or a refund but the online retailer would not agree to that and washed their hand of it all they would do is keep repairing it. I eventually ontacted Sony via a website called how to complain and they were brilliant they contacted me and eventually replaced it with a better model as the other one was discontinued

Just to check ~ make sure all connections (especially the MAINS CABLE) are securely plugged in

  • Also check the settings - my parents have just purchased Sony Bravia and after 3 hours of watching it-it suddenly came up with a message on the screen that it was going to turn off!

Have just popped over to look and the default settings were set to 3 hours power economy, if you don't touch the TV or the remote in 3 hours, it turns itself off to save power!

Have now changed this to off!

SnowWhiterThanWhite - TV in question is a "Bravia". I will look at the settings but I don't think its that as there is no rhyme and reason to when it switches to standby. Sometimes its 2 or 3 times in succesion not long after I have turned it on and other times it's a couple of hrs or not at all.
Could it be the remote? It sometimes happens when I change channels but could just be coincidence.
Thanks everyone for your input. Will go and look at settings now.

Certainly worth testing by removing the batteries.
