Thanks to whoever worked out the £60-odd a week on food for the family - that number seems a lot more do-able, somehow, as I can relate it to my own shopping spend.

I'm loving this thread, and will watch with interest. FWIW, we've had venison casserole (!) two nights running now (between 4 of us, so 8 meals) for £8-worth of meat and about £2-worth of veggies, and there's two serving's worth to go into the freezer for meals later in the month. Not an especially cheap meat, but I'd have to say it's been great value!!

I'm also finding that though the Xmas-week shopping bill was high, there's just so much food in the house at the moment, the average overall spend isn't looking any higher than the regular food shopping bills. I imagine others find this is the case too - part of it is that with not racing out to work, and this being a holiday where you do spend a lot of time just mooching about at home doing the sort of domestic stuff you don't normally get time for, we not only eat better but also more cost-effectively at this time of year than almost any other. In part, I can't be fagged to drive to the shops and fight through the crowds in the supermarket and so tend to be a bit more creative.

I'll be watching this threadv with intrest as we're trying to reduce our spend on food and at the moment I'm working on a £1 each for lunch and dinner and 50p for breakfast for 4 so £10 but would love to be able to get it down further

    Supper was 4/6:

Me: Half Waitrose Woopsied Paella (OH favorite) £2:49
OH: Half Waitrose Woopsied Paella £2:49
    DD1, DS1, DD2, DS2: Spaghetti (Tesco Value 300g = 24p) & Cheese Sauce (200g cheese £1) with peas (20p) & leftover Salmon (0p) = £1.44 for 4 = 36p each + 1 Lidl apple 10p = 46p

Total 33/36 possible meals = 92% 363 days to go

As you can see I blew the budget for our meal as my OH really fancied the paella so that's what we did as she needed a boost

I think 50p a head will be a real challenge. Can you get to any fruit & veg market stalls late in the day where there are usually huge bargains to be had? One of the problems with be to eat healthily at that lost cost and to avoid the temptation to fill up with carbohydrates (pasta/bread/potatoes) at the expense of fruit & veg. Cheap vegetables can make delicious soups which are filling meals in themselves.
