6000 meals under 50p in 2010; feeding your family on a low budget

Thanks Weezl - You (and any others) may feel free to make any comment (at whatever length) you like. Some dishes are just going to be a bit more expensive, and I will have to decide to do them or not.
I certainly put myself at a bit of a disadvantage by using stuff I bought pre challenge - this was not extravagant but also without a 50p limit in mind. We do normally put instant mash on this dish, but we had plenty of spuds around (too many even) so thought I would pad it out a bit.
No complaints from the family, but to me it did taste less fishy than usual. So understand about ringing the changes 1 by 1.I think I saw you in an ice cream parlour

do you still have potatoes mark? I have a recipe for an Indian dish that uses white cabbage and spuds - it's yummy and but not overly spicy (not sure how spice tolerant your kids are!) it uses (roughly) equal quantities potatoes to cabbage.
fry diced onions with half tsp ginger and few cloves garlic in some veg oil (a dash of sesame oil adds extra flavour)
in another pan fry cubed potatoes until browned
add good amount of garam masala, sesame seeds, cumin, coriander, s & p and one chilli (if you have it).
add onions and sliced cabbage and sweat until potato is soft
its good as a side dish to curry - but we've eaten as a main dish when cooking for vegetarians.weaving through the chaos...0 -
Someone in the new recipe challenge has posted a link to Tana Ramsey's sausage casserole - it uses a whole cabbage.
Great thread - really enjoying reading how you are doing

Mark just wanted to say how much I am enjoying your thread. Didn't want to read and run. With regard to the white cabbage couldn't find anything on this websire but it may be useful for you in the future. http://www.cookingbynumbers.com/frames.html
