I like my porridge made with water. Don't like it made with milk, then I sprinkle cinnamon on it :-) Yummy. No sugar, haven't got a sweet tooth :-)
You look like you're doing really well Mark. Well done. It's interesting reading what meals you're doing. I find budgeting subjects interesting. and enjoy reading what other people do :-)

Have you got a sandwich maker? I'm not into tuna, but, amazingly, tuna and cheese sandwiches made in a sandwich maker - those kinds which seal the edges so get the filling nice and hot, are delicious.
OOOO! I'd forgotten but I lived on tuna and cheese toasties when I was a student (20 years ago :eek:), my Mum gave me my Nana's old toastie machine and I used it for lunch every day! I put a splodge of ketchup in with mine too - LUSH

And JillD we have just replaced our broken breadmaker using our xmas argos vouchers, so definitely up for some cheap pizza with veggies on top. is there a special recipe for BM pizza dough?

(PS Not sure that the BM< is cheaper as we seem to be eating 2 loaves a day now - its always on!!) - whats the cheapest way to do the yeast 10p a sachet is not much (with Value flour) but add up)
I dont pay for yeast, I ask at the bakery area (where the actual massive ovens are) in Asda for fresh yeast - they chop a bit off and its free. No idea why, I got the idea off here years ago , if you search the forum for "fresh yeast" I think there is a thread or two somewhere. The first time I did it I felt such an idiot, as if they would just stare at me blankly, but they said yes of course! and off they went to get some. I do have to quite often explain to the person on the tills what it is and that its free, but its now part of my weekly shop. I agree te sachets add up. And you can use sunflower oil instead of melted butter, and no milk powder, and less salt.

My BM manual has a recipe for pizza dough, let me know if you want me to type it out for you. It should work in any machine with a dough setting as it ust mixes it and leaves to rise then you have to knead, shape, leave and bake yourself. In our house we do all agree it makes the best pizza in the world. And we always make double which makes 6 8-inch pizzas, 3 of which we have for tea and 3 we roll out, separate and freeze. Then can be cooked from frozen - very handy for dinner in a hurry.
(Or can freeze dough in a big lump bu then have to defrost before use obv)

Anyone done porridge with milk in the slow cooker? I've done it with water but its not as nice. I never have time to do porridge on a morning so found the slow cooker recipe great.

I do it in the microwave. Just put a small amount of oats in a bowl.

Add milk, i personally add about 2/3rds milk plus 1/3 water otherwise it can be a bit rich.

Takes about 5 min start to finish.

morning Mark and all who are following your challenge :)

I'm sorry if this has been posted before, I haven't had chance to read back yet, but having just placed my first approved foods order, I've come up with quite a few evening meals below the 20p a head bracket. Nut roast 9p a packet and flavoured couscous for 6p a packet were two of the helpful basics to make this possible. Have a lookie at their website maybe? Approved foods.

HTH and good luck with your challenge :)

Last night I made 2 x chicken pies and 1 jam tart (large) for pudding, one of the chicken pies has gone in the freezer for another time. Chips, peas and carrots... was delish! We were too full to have the jam tart!

    Chicken thighs and drumsticks £1.50
    Smart price carrots 28p
    Peas 28p
Flour, marg, lard to make pastry around 40p
marg and stock to make chicken gravy 30p
    Jam 10p
    Potatoes 20p (ish)

Total around £3.00 (ish) including a "free" chicken pie for another night!

Jam tart is for after tea tonight!!
    Starting weight 17st 4lb - weight now 15st 2lbs

    30lb lost of 30lb by June 2012 :j:j:j (80lb overall goal)

  • This is a great thread, loads of good ideas. We are very overdrawn - typical January, so I'll be reading with interest. Does anyone have a recipe for home made chicken nuggets??? As you can see I'm no Delia :)

hm CHICKEN NUGGETS are easy as pie ( easier even!)

    You need
    chicken breast
    oil
    egg
    flour
    breadcrumbs.

Make breadcrumbs by whizzing few slices of stale bread in a blender
    cut chicken to nugget shapes
first roll the chicken pieces in flour
then dip them all in beaten egg
    then roll in the breadcrumbs
heat oil in shallow fry pan
drop the chicken nuggets in ( couple at a time) you want the oil the same depth as the nugget

Depending on how long you fry for, based on how big the nuggets are, the bigger, the longer obviously. Cut open, it the first one is whie throughout- thats right. Ours are about 4 mins. We then put them on a grill tray on a low oven to let some of the oil drip out.

We also do Breast burgers like this ( so much nicer than packet) and goujons etc. Turkey steaks are also good for this.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast
