  • oooooooooo you mean i can ignore certain posters so i dont have to read their annoying comments on Marks menu, fab. I dont think I could take a whole year of telling him how bad they think his food is, constructive comments are fine but rubbishing peoples efforts I can't bear!

    Good luck Mark x

... I should just say that I have no external suppliers of food - eg eggs or produce from the garden. I am going to try and do better in the garden, but that won't kick in until spring at the earliest ...
Did you know you could have some fresh homegrown "greens" as soon as this weekend? ;)

You could try "sprouting seeds", grown in an old jar (or, if you really enjoy them, you could by the three-tiered tray thingie).

They are fab: to your egg n mayo sandwiches; as a little 'salad' on the side of your plate when you have your macaroni cheese; toss in with your cheese salad veggies. You can add them to stir fries, omelettes, toss a few in soup (at the end), use them in deli wraps, toss into pasta sauces (again, at the end).

There is a nice long thread on the subject on this forum ... here it is: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=134746&highlight=sprouting+seeds

The initial outlay (if you go for the posh system) would take you over budget, but it would be an investment rather than a squander - well, if you like them :D Try the jar method first and see how you get on. Sprouting seeds are classified as a "super food" too :)
  • I made a bit of spicy lentil soup last night, but made it without any chilli so the spicey bit is in terms of flavour rather than heat. I did this:
Melted a small knob of butter, and briefly fried some cumin seeds, cardamom pods (about 5) and coriander seeds. I then chucked in an onion and 3 cloves of garlic then sweated it all with the lid on for a few minutes. I then poured in some red lentils, and stirred to coat them in the spices and oil, and waited a few minutes before pouring cold water on the lot. I covered it, and after about 30 mins I added a tin of chopped tomatoes and some salt and pepper. Right before eating I added some garam masala. At this stage it was really thick, so we had it for dinner with some rice (as dahl). Then I put the rice in, added some hot veg stock and thinned it down into soup, which I'm eating for lunch today. Because of the rice etc, it's now a meal in a flask! No idea of the cost, but it was probably something like £2 for 8 meals. I used brown basmati rice so I know it's pretty healthy!
