Forgot to tell insurance about speeding points

I got 3 points for speeding back in sept. Anyway I forgot to tell my insurance company. I had an accident driving to a party last night (not my fault). Haven't informed insurance yet as closed today. Shall I admit it on the phone and offer to pay difference in premium for last few months or just keep quiet?

  • may. We moved and changed our address on the policy just before I got caught. Been so busy doing work to the house it totally slipped my mind!

You should be ok, a lot of Insurers only expect you to advise them of convictions when you take out cover or renew cover (A few ask to be advised immediately).

Just give the customer services a ring and declare the conviction

shall I do this before I make the claim or just tell the person on the claims line?

Just checked my policy and it says to inform them asap

I would do it before you make the claim, even though it says to inform them immediately it does not mean they will increase the premium straight away. Some companies put this to try and reduce the chances of you forgetting at renewal.
  • I will phone them first thing. I'm happy to pay the difference in premium as i would expect it. It just completely slipped my mind.
  • Most insurance companies have a 24 hour claim line dont they? I thought they had to be informed within 24 hours of the accident? well thats what police told me when i called to report an accident recently so i may be wrong?
Most insurance companies as previously mentioned only require you to declaire on renewal, so check your t&c's if you have them and the claim line isnt open
BTW i hope you and anyone else involved was/is ok?

You are expected to inform your Insurers of a claim within "A reasonable" time, it might not be possible to inform the Insurers within 24 hours for any number of reasons
  • The claims line is closed today as news years day. Policy booklet says to let them know asap but will phone first thing. At least it will be declared when I claim.

We're all fine. Just a bit of bumper damage on both cars. Was at a slow speed.
