holiday on bus/train route from notts derby

its my birthday in april and i'm hoping for us to go away but we have no car we usually go skeg butlins or haven but fancy a change looked at alton towers but wanted something abit longer than a couple of days

we r going from in between notts/derby and have 2 children 8 and 1 half board would be great but s/c ok and something to do would be nice

what about York ? Direct trains from Derby and loads to do and see ...the city's very compact so it's easy to get round without a car.

p00hsticks gives an excellent suggestion! We had a lovely time in York for a week with day trips to Leeds and Scarborough by train. Most of the stuff is fairly cheap to do and there are a number of free options. We hired a lovely apartment through cottages4u which as well as saving money on accommodation saved us an absolute fortune on food.

You also don't need great weather to still enjoy York, a bonus if you are going in April...we went in October and planned things around the weather.
