Thats just rubbish and bad propaganda mainly by PETA whos own history is very dodgy at best. If you do proper research into Iams and Eukanuba you will find that there treament of any animals is the same as other pet food manufacturers. What always amazes me when this subject comes up is the amount of people who believe without question what is written on a couple of websites without researching the background (eg whos funding them etc)

I urge anyone who is interested to do there own research and not take everything at face value.

    I have thanks

I have had dogs all my life and have never given them chicken bones as they can splinter and choke a dog. This advice was given to me by my Vet years ago, and I know a few who have ignored this advice, only to have their dog rushed to the emergency Vet when they were indeed choking!

I know lots of people give chicken bones to their dogs who have never had a problem, but why tempt fate, especially with a puppy?

Doesn't sound like it was very extensive if you still believe Petas political machine (your choice). So have you actually looked at PETA who actually published the information? The organisation that doesn't believe cats should be allowed outside Doesn't believe that Ferals should be be trapped Neutered released (they want the euthanised). Peta eurhanises 95% of the animals it takes into its virginia headquarters

So any article they publish needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. The one they published on Iams a few years ago makes lots of asssumtions with very little actual fact and they never actually name the place that is so called involved. The only so called evidence for this so called abuse is PETA an organisation with its own agenda. The ASPCA in america has investigated the claims and is happy there is no substance and also Happy to still work with IAMS as its shelters happily use IAMS food

If anyone is interested I can supply copies of information on both IAMS and PETA including Petas article on Iams (so I don't just show oneside of the story) PM me if your interested

Just to say I don't actually use IAMS food as my animals don't like it but i would happily if they did. I just hate it when dodgy propaganda gets chucked around the net and even when there so much evidence to the contrary people believe what they first read with little or no question to the background or context

Also other companies such as hills to similar research

    http://www.hillspet.co.uk/About-Hills/Animal-Welfare.aspx

Also tigerlily if I remember correctly you feed your cats Chicken wings? So are they free range chicken wings or intensively reared chicken wings. I'm betting the Latter. Its always strange when people boycott companies due to perceived problems with animal welfare but when you look into it they don't boycott other things such as non Free Range Chicken as its too inconvenient

They don't splinter if fed raw - it's only when cooked that they splinter.

I have always given raw chicken wings to 5 week old puppies when weaning and they have never had a problem. Many, many other breeder friends do exactly the same, again with no side affects.

My adults regualarly have raw chicken wings, carcasses, bones, etc, and absolutely love them. No problems.

Suggest you google BARF diet - might help allay your fears over bones.

my colleague tried the RSPCA and was shockingly told the same thing, only they added they would be "euthanased."

This doesn't surprise me at all. The RSPCA never want to know unless they have a camera crew behind them.

Im so glad these puppies found someone caring and decent who found them good homes.

From my own experience I am with M&S and have found them excellent. Never have any quibble with claims and they pay up quickly. One of my Pugs had operations on both legs and both eyes and the bill came to thousands - I didn't have to pay a penny (I had a no excess policy at the time).

My dogs can get upset stomachs quite easily too and I tend to stick with Chappie because they like it and it is quite bland and easy on the stomach. I mix in a bit of James Wellbeloved biscuit which they love too. A retired vet I know feeds her own dog on Butchers which is also a good dog food. Quite often vets only recommend certain brands because its what they sell themselves, which is wrong really.

It's completely natural for a dog or cat to eat RAW bones. If you are concerned about the dog eating too fast you can cut the wing up with poultry shears, or feed a much larger bone which will naturally slow the eating process down. If you read around online many veterinarians are openly recommending the occasional RAW chicken wing.

Why tempt fate? As someone who holds degree level qualifications in (human) nutrition and is employed in the NHS I believe the potential benefits far outweigh the risks. I wouldn't suggest any of my human clients eat a diet based purely around canned and dried foods - I advocate a biologically appropriate unprocessed diet.

There are many reasons people choose to raw feed - the one I gave earlier was dental health. Toothache is a miserable experience, dental extractions under anaesthetic are hardly risk-free, and the entire process is expensive for the owner (we are on MSE after all!).

Raw feeders also contend that a natural raw diet is more nutritious than a cooked one - and it's true that many micronutrients have to be added back to commercial ultra heat treated foods. There is some interesting anecdotal evidence of conditions as diverse as Type 2 diabetes and Crohn's disease being successfully treated with a biologically appropriate diet. I'd like to see more published studies in this area.

Speaking purely for myself, one of the reasons I give Noah the occasional chicken wing, chunk of bone in rabbit or raw mince mixes because he purrs like a train. :D Noah had a very poor start - as a stray he survived last February's snow with paws so infected he was taken by a rescue to be PTS. Interestingly there is a researched link between Noah's paw condition (pododermatitis) and ... poor dental health (he needed extractions).

Whilst I wouldn't be without Noah - I don't believe in wrapping children or animals in cotton wool for my peace of mind. I'd rather he was happy and healthy, and to me that includes being able to engage in as many natural behaviours as possible including hunting (playing) and killing (raw).

  • So pleased to hear the puppies are all doing well. Well done all of you for rescuing them.
I would not give a brass farthing to most of the animal charities now, I have had many dealing with them in the past, ie buying my two cat and my two dogs from them, they are all about money really.
My husband and I are on good money so can afford proper treatment with a very good vertinary practice, but our daughter is on benefits and finds it so difficult to get help of any kind from anywhere for her dog. It seems owning animals is only something the rich are allowed to do, if you have no money then like everything else, people think you should go without having anything. We used to pay month direct debits to lots of animal charites, but as someone else on here said, 'unless they have a camera behind them, they are not really interested in helping out.
Sorry about the rant, but well done all of you again for caring for those lovely little puppies.

If you are on such good money why don't you pay for a good insurance policy for your daughter's dog? Owning a pet is a luxury not a right, if you can't afford it there are other options such as long term fostering where the charity meets all the bills.

I am on a low income, so waited three years to adopt my current cat. In that time I have slowly saved up a nest egg by budgeting carefully and going without things others take for granted. Point your daughter in the direction of this website - threads like 'Eat Healthily on 50p per Day' (OS board) and 'Live on £4K for a Year' (DFW board) are truly inspirational.

    I've been Money Tipped!
    Hi again

Thanks again from us and Alfie. Will definitely looked into the insurance issue once he's an older dog. Will give M&S a call and see what they say.

Alfie is sleeping in our room at the moment, we've sectioned a part of the room off as his 'bedroom' and for the first time since he's been here, we didn't hear a squeek out of him for the entire night, we went to bed at 1am and put him, his bed and a lemonade bottle (which he likes playing with), along with some puppy pads and he slept until half 8 and did his toilets on the pads too with no fuss.

Hope this is a sign that he's starting to feel at home and settle down!

    Here are some pics!!
