it is a Dell Studio laptop - there is a slot on the side for a dvd/cd writer/player but not one in there.
I thought I was just setting the windows password, and only when I look at F2 Setup, it shows HDD as greyed out.
I was telling a friend last night and she said have you tried techie guys on MSE ?and I said yes.
In the end the suggestion was to phone Dell and ask for the password, which I will have to do.
Thank you again everyone for your help.0 -
Have you tried putting a DVD into the slot?!!

Have you tried putting a DVD into the slot?
hah! No I hadn't! Just couldn't see how it was a CD/DVD drive, but it is! Have put one in and obviously now can't get it out! Wish I hadn't done that!
Rang Dell, after an hour of talking to everyone and being passed from one dept to another, so pleased he called me back, otherwise would be fuming now!, no help whatsover! They want to charge me for recovery disks that they say should have been sent to me with laptop, which weren't.
And whoever told me Dell hold all the passwords.... well maybe they do but the Call Centre in India told me they don't and I have to pay for the priviliege of the posting free recovery disks to the tune of £25!0 -
I've just checked , if you are the registered owner of the Laptop and have the service tag then they CAN give you an overide codeEx forum ambassador

"I cannot get past the login screen when I try safemode" if you get safemode, you haven't set a bios password!
Did you get a manual?
There is a key on the top row of the keyboard to eject the DVD.
There should be a restore partition, instead of recovery disks, read the manual on how to restore to factory defaults - you will lose all your data.
recovery disks are no use, if you cannot get past the bios screen - if you get to the windows safe mode screen when pressing F8, your bios password cannot be the issue.
Dell can reset the bios password for you if you have really set it - you just need to find the right person, and tell them it is the bios password, not windows password.

You switch the laptop on, what comes on screen?
You switch the laptop on, holding F8, what comes on screen?!!
