  • Please don't think I'm being confrontational or rude to to you all, but please please never buy a child's riding hat from a website or Mr. T's. They really are crucial to safety - genuinely life and death if your little one is just learning and comes off near to the hooves. Hats must be measured and then checked for size and safety by a trained fitter - you only find them in a saddlery. As with every brand, different makes fit differently, so you have to have them expertly checked out.

    We have to save as much as we can (like everyone else) but never on the riding hats my girls wear. We have been around horses for decades and it still wouldn't occur to me to try and fit one properly myself despite the mouthwatering savings at our local Mr. T's. If you've ever seen an accident and a child kicked in the head (God forbid - it's the most dreadful thing when it is your own kid) you will see why it is so crucial - my daughter just got up shook her head and climbed back on once the hat had been checked. A badly fitting hat would have had too much movement if too big or jammed on and damaged her further if too small.

    All of the other kit can come from a supermarket, website (Robinsons and Derby House are great) or ebay (my favourite place for rugs etc) but not a hat.

    Sorry if I sound alarmist but too many kids are permanently damaged for the want of a properly fitting hat.

    Take care and Happy New Year

    As someone said Tesco do some clothing and bits, I bought my daughters riding hat from ebay, brand new at a fraction of the cost. As for riding boots her feet are so wide I have probs getting boots wide enough so shes usually in wellies bless her.

    FloFlo - try her in mucker boots - I have the same issue and the boots are a little warmer in this weather. Derby House (promise I have nothing to do with them) have great ones - their own make which allow me to even have socks on! There are velcro straps up the legs which can also be left open and the boots still stand up - if you see what I mean.

    I agree with another post regarding riding hats, make sure you get one thats properly fitted from your local qualified tack shop. You could always go and get one fitted then have a look at online retailers for the same brand and size to see if you can get a deal somewhere else, i wouldn't buy second hand unless you know for sure that there hasn't been a impact to the hat.

    Ebay is a good place to find some deals on riding wear, tesco's jodphurs are also good.
    Some other sites to try are - http://www.derbyhouse.co.uk/
    http://www.robinsons-uk.com/

    Thanks all for your help. i am not going to buy her a hat at present, shes happy wearing the riding stables one, I do take on board all that you have said.

    I have also found Argos outlet on ebay, under the category sports/bags and category outdoors, they have some horse clothing and equipment listed;
